Environmental & Spill Control for Garages and Industrial locations
The storage of lubricants, chemicals and other liquids could leave you liable as a company for accidents and misuse, which could lead to spills. However dealing with the containment of a spillage can quickly prevent the creation of a hazardous work environment or endanger life.
At Sprint Wholesale we supply the automotive and machinery industry with oil and chemical spill kits that are easy to store, easy to access, and cost effective in case of any spillages.
Health and Safety Executive recommends on site spills kits be kept on all premises that have a risk of spillage of oils, lubricants and other liquids.
Absorbents have a role to play in virtually all spillage incidents, major or minor, hazardous or non-hazardous.
Most absorbents are polypropylene based, produced as flat pads, sheets or rolls, or as loose particulate in permeable fabric cushions, "socks" or booms.
Absorbents to mop up all but a very small number of substances (such as mercury), are produced in three basic types, colour-coded in accordance with recent BSI recommendations.
Oil-selective absorbents (colour-coded light blue or white), for hydrocarbons, diesel, petroleum, oil-based paint, lubricants and solvents. This type repels water and consequently can be used for floating pollutants.
Chemical absorbents (colour-coded yellow), for acids, alkalis, caustic and corrosive chemicals as well as oil, coolants and water.
Maintenance absorbents (colour-coded grey), for detergents, mild chemical solutions, water and aqueous solutions, as well as oils and coolants.
Used absorbent is classified as waste and subject to the provisions of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and the Environmental Protection (Duty of Care) Regulations 1991 and 2003. This means it can be consigned only to authorised persons with appropriate documentation. Disposal procedures should be built into training courses and you should contract with a specialised disposal service.
